This summer at chess club

The ACPL All Ages Chess Club meets Saturday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon in Young Adults’ Services on the second floor of the Main Library.  Come by and play some games!

It’s also worth mentioning that there are chess sets available in Young Adults’ Services during all hours that the library is open, and often there are people looking for a game at times other than the Chess Club meeting time.

This summer, besides the 12th Annual Young Adults’ Chess Tournament on Saturday, August 8, we’ll try to have an informal tournament or two at Chess Club as well.

They just keep coming

We’ve had another couple of weeks of 15+ people showing up at our weekly meetings.  I’m not sure whether we have enough regular members to support a tournament yet, but I think we’ll get there.  It’s possible that we might be able to run a small round robin tournament with a fast time control, though.  Maybe the week after next would be good.

Meanwhile, you may or may not be aware that we’re meeting in Young Adults’ Services every week (from 10 am to 12 noon).  We used to meet in Meeting Room C, but we gave it up because YAS has better seating – though it’s farther from the Brick House Cafe, but you ARE allowed to bring food/drink into Young Adults’ Services, as long as you don’t sit at the computers with them.

Lots of people!

The last couple of weekends we’ve had 15+ people at our Chess Club meetings.  Let’s keep it going!  If you’re thinking about coming by, do it this Saturday.  And next Saturday.  And the Saturday after that.  And the … well, you get the idea.  Pretty soon we’ll have enough people to hold a small tournament!

Speaking of tournaments …

It has been mentioned by more than one person that it would be good to have a tournament where anyone can enter, regardless of age.

This is really the reason I started the ACPL All Ages Chess Club.  It’s not really useful to limit the membership of a chess club by age, unless you are in a school.  What makes more sense is to get as many chess players of all ages together, so that the players with more knowledge and experience of the game can mentor the players who are just starting out or just beginning to grasp certain key concepts.

Then, once you have a steady attendance, you build the interest and excitement by running tournaments several times a year.  So help me out by stopping by on the Saturdays you can make it, and pretty soon we’ll have enough people to get a tournament going!

Change of meeting location

The ACPL All Ages Chess Club will now meet in Young Adults’ Services every Saturday. Meeting Room C was convenient to the Brickhouse Cafe, but it wasn’t working out for other reasons, and YAS is much more comfortable anyway.

To sum up: Don’t go to Meeting Room C; go to Young Adults’ Services. Every meeting. (Which is every Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon.)

See you there!

Meeting location changed for 1-12-2008

I’ve had to move the meeting for this Saturday to Young Adults’ Services.  (I changed it on the January schedule post.)  I won’t be there for this meeting, but grab a chess set and a booth and play some games!

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose

… And sometimes it’s a draw.

Emily beat me for the first time last Saturday.  She wasn’t really keeping track, because she’s much more caught up in keeping track of how many times she’s beaten Danny (with good reason – he’s better than me).  But I notice these things.  After all, it was only a couple of weeks ago that I beat Danny for the first time!  After months of trying.

So congrats to Emily – I’m sure it won’t be the last time.  ;-)
