This summer at chess club

The ACPL All Ages Chess Club meets Saturday mornings from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon in Young Adults’ Services on the second floor of the Main Library.  Come by and play some games!

It’s also worth mentioning that there are chess sets available in Young Adults’ Services during all hours that the library is open, and often there are people looking for a game at times other than the Chess Club meeting time.

This summer, besides the 12th Annual Young Adults’ Chess Tournament on Saturday, August 8, we’ll try to have an informal tournament or two at Chess Club as well.

Young Adults Chess tournament

The publicity says the deadline to enter was last Friday.  However … we’re still accepting registrations through this Friday, August 8.  If you’re entering 6th through 12th grade – or if you just finished 12th grade – consider playing in the 11th Annual ACPL Young Adults Chess Tournament.  It’s free, it’s not rated, and you get pizza for lunch!  And though it’s not rated, there ARE trophies.  Call 421-1255 to enter.  The tournament is Saturday, August 9, from 9 am to 3:30 pm, in the meeting rooms on the first floor of the Main Library.

Please note: There will NOT be a Chess Club meeting on Saturday, August 9 or Saturday, August 16.  All of our chess attention will be devoted to running this tournament and (on the 16th) the Children’s Chess Tournament.

End-of-summer chess tournaments

Entry forms are now available for the 11th Annual Young Adult Chess Tournament! It’s an unrated, 5 round, all day affair, with snacks and pizza for lunch provided. The only catch is that you must be entering 6th through 12th grades.

Entry forms are due by Friday, August 1, 2008. On the day of the tournament, registration confirmation will be at 9:00 am, with the players’ meeting at 9:20-ish, and first round starting around 9:45. The tournament will be held in the meeting rooms (near the cafe) in the Main Library.

The Children’s Chess Tournament entry forms are not yet available, but look for them soon.

Edit: The Young Adult Chess Tournament is Saturday, August 9; The Childrens’ Chess Tournament is Saturday, August 16.

No meeting July 5

Don’t come looking for chess at the library on Saturday, July 5 – the library is closed that day, so you won’t be able to get in the door!

And then there will also be no meeting on either August 9 or August 16, due to the aforementioned Young Adults’ Services Chess Tournament and the Children’s Services Chess Tournament.

Chess Tournaments/no meeting dates

The Young Adults’ Services annual chess tournament will be held on Saturday, August 9.  There should be fliers and entry forms available for this soon.

The Childrens’ Services annual chess tournament will be held on Saturday, August 16.  Again, watch for more information soon.

There will NOT be a meeting of the ACPL All Ages Chess Club on either of those two Saturdays.

Quick update

We had something like 15 people come through last Saturday’s meeting – they weren’t all there at the same time, but still, it was great attendance compared to recent weeks.

One chess player mentioned that he thought it people might not want to play in a library department since you can’t have food and drink there.  I realized that it’s still assumed by a lot of people that you can’t have food and drink in most of the library.  BUT IT’S NOT TRUE!  ACPL changed its policy, and in the new Main Library, you can have food and drink anywhere except 1. in the Genealogy Center, and 2. at computer stations.

So now that we’ve moved the Chess Club to Young Adults’ Services on a full time basis, it IS farther from the cafe, but you can bring along your drink, snack, lunch, or other food.

We’re still meeting Saturdays from 10 am to 12 noon, but it’s probably not too early to say that there WON’T be a meeting on August 2 or August 9 – the dates of the two annual chess tournaments.  (August 2 is the tournament for kids up through 5th grade, and August 9 is the tournament for people in 6th through 12th grades.)

Change of meeting location

The ACPL All Ages Chess Club will now meet in Young Adults’ Services every Saturday. Meeting Room C was convenient to the Brickhouse Cafe, but it wasn’t working out for other reasons, and YAS is much more comfortable anyway.

To sum up: Don’t go to Meeting Room C; go to Young Adults’ Services. Every meeting. (Which is every Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon.)

See you there!
